I wish I would have run for Miss Red Wing. It is such a great opportunity! I'm living in New York now and as an actor auditioning for jobs requires good interviewing skills, confidence and basically all the stuff you learn when running for Miss Red Wing. If I could go back I would have done this program, it would have given me the tools I use now, but I would have had them straight out from High School. You can't beat this program.. I mean, the girls just met the President of the United States of America.. what a great learning experience.

I just finished up school at the end of January and have been doing LOTS of interviewing. I wanted to tell you how much everything I learned while running for Miss Red Wing comes into play. It has been so helpful! I feel like I have somewhat of a foundation to start with. So, thanks to everyone in the Miss Red Wing program. Hopefully I?ll get a job here soon!

I really enjoyed running for Miss Red Wing! Although I didn't win I still walked away with so much such as speaking skills in public, and I am extremely happy for the ones that did win. The bond that us girls made over the summer was so much fun. I really am glad I had this opportunity because without it I wouldn't have been able to get to know the other girls. You build so many great friendships that you may not have had before! My favorite activity from Miss Red Wing was at the sleep over, it was a time to relax and just have fun with eachother, and you can just be yourself without being judged. This really is a great experience!!

Being a candidate was so much fun! it was a great time to hang out with the girls before heading off to college! you learn a TON about yourself and the girls that you are running with! you grow even closer to the girls than you were before, you grow close to the committee, and you gain a second family! running for miss red wing was one of my favorite parts of the whole experience! i recommend it to anyone! have fun girls!!!!!

I did not win miss red wing, but being a candidate did teach me better public speaking and interviewing skills. I'm in the process of finding a job right now and every time I step into a new interview I think about everything I learned, Always have a smile, Dress to impress, and prepare questions to ask them back, these are some of the things I remember. Sometimes people are bitter about not winning and I felt that too, but then you realize how great the people that won are! If you're nervous about not winning- don't be, the benfits you receive by just running are so rewarding in itself!

Each year the Program Committee spends many hours with the candidates during rehearsals and various events throughout the summer helping improve the candidates' public speaking and interview skills. I love witnessing the transformation of each candidate as she develops into a more poised and professional young woman through this program.

I am sooooo thankful for the Miss Red Wing program! My summer as a candidate was amazing. Spending time with all the girls and learning how to be professional young women was a great way to spend my last summer before school. Miss Red Wing really helps prepare you for college, too! Giving a speech in a lecture hall is way easier when you have already spoke in front of 700 and some people.
I was very wishy-washy about running for Miss RW, and I am so incredibly grateful that I did. Crown or no crown, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and if any little part of you is interested....DO IT!
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Being a candidate was so much fun! I encourage everyone to run! You learn so much throughout the summer whether its public speaking skills, or how to walk "gracefully" in front of an audience. I loved spending time with all the girls! Going into this you "know" the girls but by the end of the summer they are your friends and they are part of something you will remember for the rest of your life. You have opportunities you wouldn't get to experience if you didn't run for Miss Red Wing and those are something that you feel special to be apart of. My favorite event would have to be the Lake City Parade! It is your first parade as a candidate and its a pretty big parade. You walk around and meet different people and there are lots of picture opportunities! Its a fun time to just let loose and represent Pretty Little Red Wing!

After reflecting on candidacy over ten years later (yep, I'm old), my favorite part was the opportunity to practice communication skills in a multitude of contexts. Most young women don't get the opportunity to be interviewed one-on-one, to be interviewed by a panel of judges, or to showcase the best of their talents on a stage in front of the citizens of Red Wing and surrounding communities. At the time, I don't know that any of us candidates realized all the benefits we received by going through the candidate experience, but I definitely see it now, even 11 years later, in speaking engagements and interview situations. The Miss Red Wing program is exemplary in the candidate experience, so please take advantage of all they have to offer!
If you're interested in running at all, please attend a candidate meeting or ask committee volunteers for more information. I definitely wasn't the "pageant type" when I ran, but still had a blast at every event.

I have to add, that I am so thankful for how much I grew in my professional skills. Every job I have interviewed for since Miss Red Wing I have been offerd. My friends even noticed and wonder how I do it, and say that I must be very good at interviewing. And they often ask me to run through interview questions with them and help them their answers, etc. This program is worth experiencing! It will benefit you, no matter what the outcome. Take a chance and do it!!!!
